Feed Lucas County Children, Inc. (FLCC), founded in 2002, is the advocate for the relief and elimination of child hunger in Lucas County.

Brief Background

Feed Lucas County Children, Inc. (FLCC), founded in 2002, is the advocate for child hunger in Lucas County. We are neither a food bank nor a food pantry, but, actually prepare meals for children. FLCC offers free meals to children whose family income falls below the poverty level. Hot and nutritious meals as well as enrichment programs are offered five days a week during the summer. Funding comes from private donors, businesses, grants, churches and some federal money. We are the umbrella to over 90 sites (agencies) in Lucas County for food. In the same token, the addition of educational components enhances each site’s success. These hot, balanced meals provide a baseline to successful tutoring programs.
  • 2002 – FLCC served 7,200 hot balanced meals at 2 sites

  • 2009 – FLCC served 179,842 hot balanced meals at 90 sites (24) Schools, (5) Community Centers, (17) Parks, (19) Non-profit organizations and (25) Churches. 2010 meal count – 241,310 at 102 sites!

  • As a charity, 93% of all donations go to the program

  • Toledo is #10 poorest city in the U.S. PLUS 24,420 CHILDREN live below the poverty level in Lucas County

FLCC has developed relationships and collaborations with many agencies, including Mercy Children’s Hospital (partner, health classes), ProMedica (health screenings), Chance for Change, the Boy Scouts (outreach program), the Toledo Dental Association, Owens Community College, Toledo Dental Hygienist Association (ongoing dental program), local churches, Toledo Public Schools, Lucas County Extension Service, Toledo-Lucas County Library.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

1. Supplied hot balanced meals to 7,210 of the 24,243 at-risk children throughout the county last summer

2. Part of only 3% of the summer food sponsors that offer hot balanced meals in the state of Ohio

3. Top 1% of the largest sponsors in the state

4. State Faith Based Initiative Office to Governor Ted Strickland has visited to gather ideas from our proven track record to utilize in other counties

5. During the February 09 “Food Summit”, we announced meals for after-school programs starting October 1, 2009.

6. Developed a larger collaboration with additional agencies regarding the need for food to more families within Lucas County

7. From conception of this charity, we earned our start with no major funding or seed money. We sacrificed a lot of personal time and money to make it one of the most successful charities in the area, exceeding public expectations

8. FLCC is an excellent example of what collaboration is all about.

9. Provide one of the healthiest menus in the state of Ohio for local schools and organizations 10. Annually provide measurable results
